Theories Of Leadership Styles And Other Factors That...

Introduction This report will evaluate theories of leadership, leadership styles and other factors that impact on leadership. Within today’s business environment Turner (1998) suggests that leaders should have the ability to ‘innovate’ and ‘harness’ the skills and abilities of employees to achieve continuous improvements for ‘the greater good’ of a business. Therefore, today’s leader must hold various qualities and characteristics to preserve the ever-changing demands and challenges in the continual changing business environment which will be discussed within this report. Theories of Leadership For several years leadership theories have been widely research to understand what makes a great leader. Early leadership theories focused on what enabled people to become successful leaders. Trait Theories ‘Leaders are born and not made’ (Northouse, 2013, p: 19). Research carried out by Carlyle (1840) studied leadership to determine what made people ‘Great Leaders’ the theory developed was called ‘The Great Man Theory’ the study focused on understanding the qualities and characteristics that great leaders possessed. It was suggested leadership was a mixture of inherent interpersonal skills along with the individual’s personality and their requirement for success. Further research undertook by Stogdill (1948) as cited by Northouse (2013) argued that leadership traits could vary between individuals and leaders may stand out in one situation compared to another.
